Rooted in Traditional Japanese Sharpening Methods

I had been sharpening for about 8 years, when in 2018, I was honorably invited to spend a week at the Kikui Scissor Factory in Wakayama, Japan. I was taught the importance of rigorously assessing every scissor prior to beginning the sharpening process.

The Balance in each scissor is different and must be properly installed back into the scissor at the beginning of the process. Shaving, is sharpening each blade in a 2phase process, topside and underside.

Topside is accomplished on a flat hone with an abrasive/sand paper and underside on a sharpening stone. Polishing is to smooth and shine the scratch marks out of the surface and cutting edge of the scissor.
